Amherst Is Ready To Make Change In Government

Amherst is changing its style of  government.

Following an election vote on Tuesday, the town will  replace its current 240-member town meeting council and five-member  select board with a 13-member town council.

Those in favor of the  charter change said Amherst would benefit from a full-time government  body, but opponents claimed the town meeting style was more democratic.

About a third of all voters in the community cast ballots.
