Ruben Barrero has been sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
He is the 39 year old Springfield man accused of stabbing a police officer last week.
A preliminary report says that the defendant is not competent to stand trial.
Now a more thorough evaluation will be done.
He is being held without the right to bail and will be back in court April 3rd.
The officer who was attacked is recovering at home.
