Springfield Mayor "Reassuring" Call From New Owners Calms Nerves Over Deal

Eversource Energy is acquiring Columbia Gas of Massachusetts from NiSource for one-point-one billion dollars.

NiSource stopped doing business in the state after Columbia Gas pleaded guilty to violating the Pipeline Safety Act after explosions in September in 2018.

Eversource will add 330-thousand customers in over 60 communities in the state.

The transaction between Eversource and NiSource is expected to be completed later this year.

Meantime, the pleadings includes a 53 million dollar fine to the federal government.

The deal to take over the Columbia Gas territory is expected to be approved by the end of the year.

Springfield Mayor Dom Sarno says he is ok with the negotiations after having spoken with company officials.

"The leadership team of Eversource has reached out to me and provided me with an update of their plans to acquire Columbia Gas.

They have reassured me that they will continue to serve our community and provide the quality of service that our residents and businesses deserve.

I look forward to again meeting with the leadership team of Eversource in the very near future.

To continue to build on our good working relationship for the betterment of our Springfield residents and business community,” said Mayor Dom Sarno.
