House Speaker To Leave Beacon Hill

State House Speaker Robert DeLeo is stepping down today.

DeLeo announced yesterday that he's resigning as of six p.m. today, and he's expected to take a job at his alma mater, Northeastern University.

Quincy Representative Ron Mariano will be elected by House Democrats to succeed DeLeo during a caucus tomorrow.

DeLeo says it has been an honor and privilege to serve in the House for 30 years, including the dozen years spent as speaker.

Although he has not said what his future plans will be, the 70 year old DeLeo is expected to take a position at Northeastern University.
