Springfield Bans Commercial Breeders -Urges Adoption Instead

A ban on selling pets from commercial breeders, including puppies, kittens and rabbits, is going into effect in Springfield on Wednesday.

The ordinance was signed by Mayor Domenic Sarno over a year ago.

The MSPCA pushed for the action to be taken, citing the poor health conditions of animals that come out of commercial breeding facilities.

Instead, pet stores will be allowed to provide shelter animals for adoption.

Springfield is the ninth Massachusetts municipality to enact such a ban.
