Holyoke Police Make First ShotSpotter Arrest

The first arrest has been made in connection to the newly-installed "ShotSpotter" program in Holyoke.

The city council debated using the gunfire recognition technology that runs in other cities, including Springfield, last fall.

Board member Jose Maldonado Velez spoke against ShotSpotter, claiming it would increase policing in minority communities.

The Holyoke Police Department says gunfire was detected on Oak Street on Friday.

Twenty-year-old Dereck Carattini of Holyoke was arrested for carrying an untraceable "ghost gun".

Meantime, according to a statement from the police department, "According to Holyoke Dispatch no calls were received to report either shot fired. If not for shot spotter, the Holyoke Police Department would not have been notified and a violent person would not be off the streets of Holyoke." Nothing from the arraignment session yet.
